Below are the examples I made for each of the 3 options you have this year for Science Fair. Please use them as resources for designing your own projects.

Tech Developer:

Please see this webpage and model your site accordingly. See the RUBRIC post for full requirements.

I built this site using Wix software and Google Tour Builder, as specified in the project requirements (see previous blog post).

Crafty Creator:

For this option, I watched the movie JANE, which reviews the life and scientific contribution of Jane Goodall, pioneering researcher. Here is what I would write for my one-page description of my project, which I must submit along with my craft project:

Kimberlee Taylor (add any other names of your project partners here)

Period _____ (add your class periods here)

Jane Goodall studied gorillas and chimpanzees and their manner of communication. She lived in the wilds of Tanzanian Africa for many years intermittently from 1960-2000 in order to study these amazing creatures. She theorized that apes were more intelligent than the scientific community gave them credit for, and she hypothesized that studying their patterns of communication could provide useful information about the evolution of early hominids.

Once exposed to these amazing creatures, Jane became a devoted advocate of African preservation efforts. Gorilla populations continue to be threatened by poaching and deforestation. Goodall's thesis, 'Behavior of Free-Living Chimpanzees' (1966) became a seminal work in evolutionary development research, and rocked the biological community.

To represent this documentary, I made a crocheted model of a tree from a plastic bag that I cut into really thin strips. I used a crochet hook to interlock the plastic strips to form a tree. To form the branches, I used a piece of wooden dowling to form the branch shapes. I sprayed it with a silicone gel to make sure it would harden and be able to stand independently.

This project ties in to both the documentary and Biology in that it exemplifies the intricate relationship between the natural world around us, and the encroaching influence of the civilized world. The tree represents the natural world that Jane Goodall struggles to protect, and the plastic represents the increasing destruction of the natural world to make artificial products. As the jungles of Africa shrink, the ecology and biology of the region changes. Gorillas and chimpanzees have less and less area to roam in. This means that different family groups overlap territories, facilitating hostile interaction as they compete for resources. Additional conservation efforts are needed to ensure the survival of these unique species, especially since Goodall proved that we have so much to learn from these magnificent creatures.

Old School Glory:

Here is a good webpage to use when designing your board - it gives an outline and advice:

Make sure to use the grading rubric on the previous post - this will help you make sure you have covered all the requirements!
